It's all in the piping technique! I experiment with different nozzles and pick which one would work best on each size cake (or cupcake) It's always better if you use a thicker frosting, that way it comes out slower making it easier. 

I am guessing the frosting you are using is of a thinner mixture?

I usually make my own frosting so I know how thick to make it.
